Conflict Resolution

Killing off actor Kevin Kilner in the second-season premiere will allow the syndicated series Gene Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict (week of October 5; check TV GUIDE listings) to evolve into an ensemble drama, according to costar Lisa Howard. "As an actor, Kevin is happy to be moving on because at this stage in his career he really wants to be in leading-man type vehicles," Howard says. "Now we're free to explore the relationships between [Howard's alter ego, Capt. Lili [Marquette], the resistance and the [enemy] Taelons. She's the one person the audience can identify with."

Howard welcomes her enhanced role on the show but regrets its impact on her lifestyle. "I used up all my frequent-flyer miles commuting between Toronto and the set of Suddenly Susan in L.A.," she says with a laugh. "I loved playing Judd Nelson's evil ex-wife, Margo Fargo, and when I was done, I could spend time with my husband [former TV GUIDE writer Daniel Howard Cerone]." Still, given the chance, Howard would go to extremes to accommodate Suddenly Susan into her schedule. "I love the character. I try to play her like her Prozac dosage is just a little off, and after the intensity of a one-hour drama, you need a little silliness."
